CANNING, 25 JUNE: A youth was allegedly beaten up by villagers today after he tried to rape a Class IX girl at her home, police said. The incident took place at Atharobanki village in Canning under the jurisdiction of Jibantala police station. The youth was arrested on the basis of a complaint lodged by the girl’s family. Her father was detained for inquiry. Local sources said the girl had an affair with her neighbour Alamgir Mollah, a resident of Atharobanki village. Her family knew of this but they fixed her marriage with another youth. Mollah came to know of this and went to the girl’s residence and allegedly tried to rape her in broad daylight. Police said angry villagers caught the youth red-handed and tied him to a post and beat him up. Police rescued the seriously injured youth and took him to a local hospital. He was discharged after primary treatment but was arrested later on the basis of a complaint lodged by the girl’s father. On the basis of a counter-complaint lodged by the youth’s father, police detained the girl’s father and interrogated him to know the names of the people who had tortured the youth.
