KOLKATA, 5 OCT: A 28-year-old youth committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling of a room at his residence after he was allegedly harassed by some policemen at Nonadanga late last night.
According to local people, Uttam Mondal, a taxi driver, was allegedly harassed by his wife, her relatives and an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) after the wife complained that her husband had manhandled her.
The victim’s wife, Papiya, informed the ASI and her relatives following a quarrel with her husband last night. The ASI and her relatives went to Uttam’s residence and allegedly threatened him with dire consequences. They allegedly beat him up and took him to the Nonadanga police outpost.
The victim’s family later went to the out post and convinced the police officer to leave Uttam. The police officer allegedly demanded some money to settle the matter. Uttam was allowed to return home after repeated requests by his family.
This morning Uttam’s body was found hanging at his residence. His family informed police. Local people didn’t allow police to take the body for post-mortem. They demanded police arrest Uttam’s wife, her family members and the accused policeman. The agitation continued for around three hours. Senior officers had to rush to the spot. A complaint has been lodged against six persons, including Papiya.
Earlier, Aminul Islam, who had been fighting for justice for a rape victim, had committed suicide by self-immolation a few months ago after allegedly being harassed by some officers of the Karaya police station. Such incidents have left senior officers of the Kolkata Police in a spot. An officer said necessary steps would be taken if the ASI is found guilty.
