KOLKATA, 18 JUNE: A youth died under mysterious circumstances while in custody of Shibpur police. His family have alleged police atrocities behind his death.
A resident of Bally’s Tapuipara, Partho Ghosh (35), who was engaged in hooch business, was picked up by Excise officials from outside his home last Thursday. He was later handed over to Shibpur police. “He disappeared and later we received a call from police informing he has been picked for interrogation,” said the youth’s relative on condition of anonymity. The youth’s family said a policeman called them up on Sunday and told them Partho had died after he became ill and was admitted to Sambunath Pandit hospital in the city. The family, however, said Partho was suffering from some ailments, but not serious enough to kill him. “He was brutally tortured and beaten to death in police custody. The policemen shifted him to the hospital just to save their skins," alleged a relatives of the deceased. Officers of Shibpur police station said Partho fell seriously ill and was taken to the hospital where he died. A complaint has been lodged by the deceased’s family at Nischinda police station. sns
