Krishnagar, 21 July
For the first time in West Bengal, women would be deployed as presiding and polling officers for the fourth phase three-tier panchayat polls tomorrow.
As many as 50 women from different workplaces in Nadia district have been entrusted with poll duty at ten polling booths in Krishnagar –I block as presiding officers and polling officers.
The district magistrate and the district election officer, Mr P B Salim, hoped that the deployment of women would check the practice of proxy voting in the district as they have been found to be more serious about their work than their male counterparts in Nadia.
The selected women would exercise their duties at seven booths in Depara, two in Ruipur and one in Bhatjangla, all of which are close to the district headquarters. Temporary toilets will be set up for them.
