An undertrial’s body was found at a police station lock up in Birbhum district on Monday following which a mob ransacked the police station compound.
A senior police officer said the body of Raju Thandar (28) was found in the lock-up of Bolpur police station this morning.
Raju had been arrested Thursday night on charge of burglary in Bolpur town and his body was recovered on Monday, the officer said.
He said while police handed over the body to his family after all formalities, a mob of around 100 people arrived at the police station in the evening with the body and ransacked the place.
The mob also set ablaze an adjacent tea stall frequented by cops and hurled bricks, the officer said adding police resorted to lathicharge and used rubber bullets to quell the mob.
The body was finally cremated by police in the presence of his widow.
