Behrampore, 7 February
An under-trial prisoner, Raju Sheikh (28) was found dead at the Behrampore Central Correctional Home. The reasons for the same are yet to be ascertained. Sheikh, hailing from the Zamindari area of Gorabazar at Behrampore police station, Murshidabad district, was arrested a couple of weeks ago on charges of bicycle theft, said the SP, Dr Humayun Kabir.
“The corpse has been video-graphed and investigation is going on as per stipulated guidelines,” he said.
A rickshaw-puller by profession, Sheikh had a family of four comprising his wife and two children.
Correctional Home sources said that Sheikh, a heroin addict, was hospitalised as his condition deteriorated. He was put to trial under the Narcotic Drug and Psychotropic Substances Act. Significantly, a few hundred prisoners like Sheikh went on a hunger strike in protest against false incrimination allegedly by police and a procrastinated trial by NDPS court.
The prisoners called off their agitation at the intervention of the District Judge, Mr Prasenjit Biswas, this week. A Bangladeshi prisoner who had completed his jail term and was waiting for push-back to his homeland is also suspected to have been killed inside the Behrampore Central Correctional Home weeks ago.
According to a police report, a confirmed case of killing inside the Central Jail was reported when one Rafik Sheikh from Hariharpara was found murdered in his cell last year.
