KOLKATA, 8 JUNE: Traffic is likely to be thrown out of gear in the heart of the city on Monday as the state Congress is scheduled to hold a stay-in demonstration at Rani Rasmoni Avenue. Announcing this, PCC president Mr Pradip Bhattacharya said today that the demonstration would be held in protest against forcible obstruction of party candidates from filing nomination in the panchayat election.
Two Congress delegations met the Governor, Mr M K Narayanan, and state election commissioner, Ms Mira Pandey, during the day and apprised them of the alleged partisan behaviour of some of officers. The officers-in-charge of Pingla and Kotolpur police station are among them, the PCC chief said.
A Congress nominee’s house was ransacked in Burdwan, Mr Bhattacharya pointed out, saying it was all a part of the intimidation strategy of the Trinamul Congress. Responding to Trinamul’s demands for details of specific cases of violence by its cadre, Mr Bhattacharya said as long as the SEC exists, there is no reason for the PCC to raise the issue with the Trinamul leadership. sns
