RAIGANJ, 18 JUNE: Police arrested a Trinamul Congress leader and a rice merchant Subrata Sarkar from Sakrile village in the Raiganj police station area of North Dinajpur district last night.
Reportedly, police found some sacks of stolen rice in the godown of the Trinamul leader. He was arrested.
It was reported that Subrata Sarkar was a resident of Rupahar village in Raiganj. He had a rice mill
and a godown at Sakrile village.
On 11 June night, a rice-laden lorry was hijacked by anti-socials from a place near Nimaibill on National Highway 34 in Itahar of North Dinajpur district.
Reportedly, the hijackers posed themselves as Motor Vehicle Officers and fled with the rice-laden lorry.
Later, the driver and the assistant were dropped from the lorry at some place near Kaliaganj.
After being informed, police raided the godown of Subrata Sarkar at Sakrile last night.
They recovered the empty sacks of stolen rice from this godown.
The TMC leader was then arrested.
The president of North Dinajpur TMC Committee Mr Amal Acharjee said: “Previously, Subrata Sarkar was a Congress member. A few months ago, he joined the Trinamul Congress. He is known as a very gentle fellow in the locality. He was victimised by some Congress leaders and a section of police officials.”
The Additional Police Super of North Dinajpur district, Mr Devid Lepcha, said: “We spotted the sacks of stolen rice from the godown of Subrata Sarkar. We suspected that rice was being sent elsewhere after changing the sacks. He was produced before court today from where he was taken in five days police remand.”
