Behrampore, 4 September: Students of a government-aided secondary school in Murshidabad put up a united front to prevent their teacher from being physically assaulted.
The teacher, Mr Mrityunjoy Mondal of Panchgram High School at Nabagram block in Murshidabad, was allegedly beaten up by Rupchand Hossain yesterday.
Mr Hossain, guardian of a class-VIII student, Md Hossain Ali, had asked the teacher to explain why his son had been beaten up; an altercation ensued, during which the teacher was beaten up.
Following the scuffle, a few hundred students of the school demonstrated and demanded an apology from the guardian. Classes were stalled yesterday due to the protest, in which the students were backed by teachers.
When classes were stalled today as well, police personnel were deployed there; administrative officials assured school authorities that penal action would be taken against the errant guardian.
“Classes will be held as normal tomorrow onwards,” said Jamal Abdul Naser, Teacher-in-Charge of Panchgram High School, dismissing fears of continued turmoil.      SNS
