State govt to foster 10 Intelligent Cities

The state is planning to promote 10 Intelligent Cities to woo investors. The four cities picked for the Smart City race would also be included as Intelligent Cities.

Intelligent Cities, explained Debashis Sen, Principal Secretary, Urban Development, “would be futuristic cities and during the Global Business Summit planned in Kolkata in the first week of January, these cities would be in prime focus.”

He was in Durgapur on Wednesday to conduct a high-power interactive session at the Durgapur Municipal Corporation for the Smart City project. He said: “Besides the four cities in the race for Smart City tag, six other towns - Asansol, Bolpur, Siliguri, Howrah and Baruipur- have been chosen to be developed as Intelligent Cities.”

Sen said: “Just three days ago at a summit in Delhi, we went through a presentation for Hyderabad Intelligent City in which we were amazed to see that all the software and hardware companies operating there have signed agreements with the local civic body on issues of their contribution towards the same. We may look at a similar model here too.”

The Intelligent Cities would feature adequate green zones and dazzling state-of the-art basic infrastructure to woo the investors. Sen said: “What we have learnt is that 60 to 65 per cent growth projected in the GDP is urban based and for this, we need to give the urban conglomerates a very new face.”

Burdwan is set to observe a car-free day on 15 December. Sen said: “This is an attempt to move to a green environment and the Intelligent Cities would have similar attempts, which would make them attractive to expatriate workers too.”

The Smart Cities and the Intelligent Cities would extensively exploit solar power to help reduce use of fossil fuel. Sen said: “Before 15 December, if we at UD department receive applications and proposals for mass usage of solar power, we shall give approval immediately.”

The Durgapur Municipal Corporation, as part of its Smart City promotion, in its last board meeting, had decided to declare 15 per cent rebate on houses having provisions for using solar energy and rain water harvesting facility.

The 4 cities picked for the Smart City race would also be included as Intelligent Cities.
