Nearly six months after floods and landslides ravaged several parts of Uttarakhand, the Centre has released Rs 98 lakh for compensating the kin of 28 out of 38 victims from Bengal. 
The next of kin of each victim will get compensation of Rs 3.5 lakh. Of this, Rs 2 lakh has been released from the Prime Minister&’s Relief Fund and remaining Rs 1.5 lakh by the Uttarakhand government.
The state government plans to release another Rs 2 lakh each to the victims’ families. The state disaster management department has approached the Centre for releasing funds from the State Disaster Response Fund, which has a Central allocation of 75 per cent.
The department has also approached the Centre to expedite the process for disbursing funds for the next of kin of the remaining 10 victims.
The compensation will be disbursed through cheques. But ahead of this, the department has sought claims and objections to the grant of relief to the 28 victims’ kin.
