MIDNAPORE, 8 JUNE: No party, including the Trinamul Congress, has filed nomination for a panchayat samity seat in Benachapra in Garbeta-I block in West Midnapore. The deadline for filing nomination expired on 5 June; no Independent has filed nomination for the seat either.
Surprisingly, Trinamul Congress district leaders have termed the matter a mere mistake. However, the situation ~ a likely first in the state ~ has become a cause for worry for the district administration, which has informed the state election commission.
Two years ago, Benachapra made headlines when seven skeletons were dug out from the area; former CPI-M minister Mr Susanta Ghosh is now facing trial in the Benachapra skeleton recovery case.
Mr Bimalendu Das, Garbeta-I block development officer, said, “In the 35-year history of the panchayat samity, for the first time no party has filed nomination.” Mr Surendra Gupta, district magistrate, said, “I have already apprised the state election commissioner about the matter.” Political observers believe the commission will conduct an election for this particular seat after the end of the panchayat poll. sns
