Even before taking charge, many of the newly inducted ministers have already prepared their action plans.
Hailing from the tribal community and appointed as tribal minister, Mr James Kujur, who won from Kumargram assembly segment in Alipurduar, said he is well acquainted with the problems that tribals face. Skill upgradation for tribals is the need of the hour and he would focus on avenues for enhancing skills so as to bring an overall improvement in the quality of their lives. Again, there are many areas in the tribal dominated tea gardens where infrastructure has to be improved, Mr Kujur said.
This time, a total of 18 new ministers have been inducted in the state Cabinet. These include heavyweight politicians like mayor Sovan Chatterjee, Mr Shovandeb Chattopadhyay and Abdur Rezzak Mollah.
For Mr Mollah, former CPI-M leader who was land and land reforms minister in Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee&’s Cabinet, the departments of horticulture and food processing that have been allotted to him are not new.
“I held those departments in Jyoti Basu&’s Cabinet. At that time, the department was at Mayukh Bhawan.
“Now, it has to be seen as to whether the tasks undertaken by the departments have progressed in these years or not. I had always worked hard as a minister and would continue to do so” said Mr Mollah.
“There is a huge potential for cauliflower cultivation in south Bengal and pineapple cultivation in north Bengal. We have to work on these areas, he said.
Another new entrant, Mr Shyamal Santra, appointed as MoS panchyat and PHE, said his priority will be to address problem of scarcity of drinking water in some of the blocks of Bankura, Purulia and West Midnapore.
This apart, a database on all the blocks has to be created so that information will be available at the click of a mouse.
Similarly, MoS tourism Ghulam Rabbani said he would work on improving tourism scope in both north and south Bengal.
Mass education and library services minister Siddiqullah Chowdhury said he would not disclose the details but there are several tasks that need to be done and he would discuss those with officials of his department after taking charge on Monday.
Among other new faces in the Cabinet are celebrities like Indranil Sengupta and Laxmi Ratan Shukla and Siddiqulla Choudhury, Asima Patra, Bacchu Hansda, Sandhyarani Tudu, Rabindranath Ghosh, Abani Joardar and Zakir Hussain.
