Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today took a dig at the media accusing it of blowing some matters out of proportion while lauding the efforts of the police to turn Kolkata into the safest city in the world.

“People don’t hesitate to hype any issue but they fail to highlight the good work done by the police. The police work tirelessly across the year to ensure safety of the citizens.

The police get no holidays even during the festivals when they guard every nook and corner of the city and facilitate free movement of traffic,” she said, while addressing the audience at Jaye Ho, the yearly event of Kolkata police at Netaji Indoor Stadium.

She said the responsibilities of the police have increased with the emergence of cyber crime and despite shortage of staff, they are discharging their duties well.

The Chief Minister also awarded the ten police personnel who had risked their lives to save the security personnel travelling inside the escort vehicle of President Pranab Mukherjee’s convoy after it slipped into a ditch at Darjeeling on July 15.

They were honoured with a cheque of rupees fifty thousand. The audience were enthralled by the performances of Tollywood actors like Prosenjit Chatterjee, and Rituparna Sengupta and mellifluous voice of Jeet Ganguly, among other artistes.
