BARRACKPORE, 15 JUNE: The prime accused in the murder of Trinamul Congress Jitu Lal Tanti was arrested last night from Digha. Mr Debabrata Ghosh, alias Laltu, was produced in a Barrackpore court today and has been remanded in police custody for the 14 days.
Barrackpore and Titagarh police said they tracked Laltu down following a tip-off. Laltu is accused of murdered TMC supporter Jitu Lal Tanti on 6 JUne at the Barrackpore Naya Bazar area. He had been absconding since the incident.
The murder was apparently a fallout of the factional feud within the Trinamul Congress in the Barrackpore area between the two groups led by Mr Shibu Yadav and Mr Rabin Bhattacharya. Jitu was a supporter of Mr Yadav’s group while the accused is Mr Bhattacharya’s man. Jitu’s murder worsened the situation in Barrackpore, with Mr Yadav’s faction attacking Mr Bhattacharya’s supporters. Several reporters who were trying to cover the clashes were also targeted by Mr Yadav’s supporters.
Titagarh police said they received a tip-off of Laltu’s presence in Digha about two days back, and an SOG team arrested him last night from a hotel at the sea-side resort.
Meanwhile, Mr Shibu Yadav, prime accused in the attack on the reporters, was also produced in Barrackpore court at around 5.30 p.m. after being brought from Bihar’s East Champaran district, where he had been arrested, on a transit remand.
Police also arrested eight other persons along with him ~ Mr Arun Mukherjee alias Chor Ghola, Mr Sankar Yadav, Mr Ranjit Patra, Mr Kapil Roy, Mr Kamal Das, Mr Abhishek Yadav, Md Shakil and Mr Sonu Balmiki. Mr Shibu Yadav, Mr Arun Mukherjee, and Mr Sonu Balmiki were remanded in police custody for 12 days while the other six were remanded in judicial custody. sns
