DURGAPUR, 19 JUNE: Police arrested Kumar Sheikh for the murder of Rajkumar Mondal ~ a local trader in Katwa, Burdwan, who was shot dead at his shop on 1 June. Police had arrested six persons in this connection and during interrogation they discovered Kumar’s involvement. Kumar is the brother of Rahimuddin Sheikh ~ the local youth who was murdered last November. Burdwan SP S M H Meerza said: “Kumar had hired Shafik Sheikh and his aides and paid them Rs 30,000 to murder Rajkumar, the alleged mastermind behind his brother&’s murder.” Five firearms, including a single barrel gun, 12 rounds of ammunitions, 15 live bombs, were recovered from Kumar&’s possession. Galsi police station officers, meanwhile, intercepted a car on NH-2 at midnight yesterday and seized seven new pipe-guns, 10 rounds of 8 mm ammunitions with a 9 mm pistol and two rounds of ammunitions. Three persons ~ Ganga Majhi, Jhoro Konda, Sheikh Kochi ~ were arrested, police said. In Kshetia locality in Burdwan town police, acting on a tip-off, raided the homes of Laltu Molla and Sheikh Azad and seized two loaded muskets and six live-bombs. Both were arrested in 2009 after a Trinamul Congress leader was murdered in the locality. sns
