After two Teachers-in-charge (TICs) of Malda College, Mr Prabhas Choudhury and Mr Ataur Rahaman, resigned allegedly in face of the Trinamul Chhatra Parishad&’s (TMCP) demand of 106 forms they managed to get allegedly by political manipulation, the Governing Body (GB) in its meeting yesterday temporarily appointed History teacher of the college Mr Ashim Sarkar as the new TIC. Mr Sarkar is the third TIC of the college in the past five days.
The college GB has sought admission for the TIC post again by 17 July.
It may be mentioned that Mr Choudhury was appointed the TIC of Malda College in January this year. But reportedly he was never in the good books of the ruling party and he tendered his resignation last month when he was opposed in introducing the online admission system allegedly by the TMCP leaders. However, he was asked to continue by the college GB president Mr Santosh Chakraborty. But the fissure between Mr Choudhury and Trinamul leaders further resurfaced when the TMCP leaders demanded 106 admission forms.
Mr Choudhury strongly objected claiming that such a move would disrupt the merit list as well as violate the norms of admission introduced by the state government.
On the contrary, the TMCP district president Mr Prasenjit Das, claimed that Mr Choudhury himself violated the merit list by admitting wards of some of his colleagues whose names did not figure in the list.
While the Tourism Minister Mr Krishnendu Choudhury stongly backed the TMCP&’s demand, the staff council of the college ratified the TIC’s decision and welcomed it also.
Later, the TIC met the Education Minister Mr Bratya Basu who reportedly advised him to run the college paying heed to the Tourism Minister&’s advice. Soon after returning from Kolkata, the TIC insisted the GB president Mr Chakraborty to accept his former resignation letter as that was not officially terminated. He then went on leave for a fortnight.
Mr Rahaman was requested to hold the post temporarily but after TMCP again demanded admission against those 106 forms, he too refused to continue.
Following the situation, the college GB yesterday in a crucial meeting accepted resignation of Mr Prabhas Choudhury and appointed Mr Sarkar as the new TIC for the time being.
College GB member and district Trinamul general secretary Debapriya Saha said: “We have invited applications from the senior most college teachers for the TIC post. Scrutinising the applications, we would appoint the new TIC on 17 July.”
The TMCP president, Mr Das, welcomed Mr Choudhury&’s resignation and demanded a probe into the expenditures made during his tenure.
Mr Choudhury, however, said: “Expenditures were made in adherence with rules and regulations. Any probe is quite welcome.”
