In a first of its kind, a residential primary school will be set up by Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) for girl students at Kasiswar Chatterjee Lane, near Cossipore.

This new initiative by KMC is being made available for underprivileged, homeless children in the bustee areas.

The school will initially accommodate 100 students who will be provided all the basic amenities, food and proper hostel facilities. Moreover, the teachers to be appointed by the KMC will stay with the students in the same premises. "This is a new initiative by the KMC.

For the homeless girls, getting education is not enough. They must also have a secure environment, a secure home for their developed future. This effort by the KMC will surely ensure that homeless girls get both education and a secure shelter," Avijit Mukherjee, member,Mayorin-Council (education) affirmed.

He further added: "The teachers of the school will be available for the benefit of the students, so that the students can be under constant guidance of the teachers. The students must have an overall development besides just academics. For that, providing them with a conducive environment is of utmost necessity." The KMC has identified the place that will house the school. The Mayor, Mr Sovan Chatterjee, has approved of the plan to set up the school.

The KMC already has an existing primary school in the land, which was provided on rent to KMC. However, KMC will take over the land, 4/1 Kasiswar Chatterjee Lane before beginning construction of the building for the residential school.
