KOLKATA, 22 JUNE: The prime accused in the Barasat rape and murder case, Mr Ansar Ali, was remanded in 14 days judicial custody today after he was produced in court on the expiry of his four-day CID remand.
Police had a tough time controlling the mob that wanted to vent its ire on Ali. Hundreds of people ~ mainly Kamduni villagers, including the victim’s brother ~ chanted slogans outside the court demanding the hanging of the accused.
"We don’t need jobs or other help from the government, but justice and only justice," said a protestor.
"The government should set an example by handing down a stern sentence to him. He has brutally raped and murdered an innocent girl," a woman protestor said.
Police deployment was increased in and around the court to protect the accused from the wrath of the people.
Several BJP supporters were present in the court demanding justice for the girl.
The incident, followed by similar cases in other parts of the state, has sparked a public outcry, with questions being raised over the law and order situation and safety of women in West Bengal.
In a related development, the District Inspector of North 24-Parganas today issued a show cause notice to the headmaster of Kamduni Primary School, seeking an explanation for suspending classes and organising a rally on 12 June in support of Kamduni’s rape and murder victim.
The victim, who had been a student at the school, was found murdered on 7 June.
Student roughed up
KOLKATA, 22 JUNE: A student of Calcutta University was allegedly roughed up by Trinamul Congress supporters for participating in yesterday’s rally organised as a mark of protest against atrocities that have been carried out on women in the state. The incident took place minutes after Swapan Kotal returned to his college after attending the rally and was sitting outside the office of a senior faculty member when a group of students approached him and allegedly thrashed him. A counter complaint of eve-teasing against Kotal was filed after he lodged a complaint of assault at Jorasanko police station. sns
