Siliguri, 5 December
The Special Court, Siliguri, (under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act), show-caused   Pradhannagar Inspector-in-charge (I-C) Mr Rajib Bhattacharya, for having
produced an ‘innocent’ person instead of the real accused in connection with a drug haul case continuing since 2004 in court today.
The accused, Mr Aloke Das, a resident of South Bajhajatin Colony, Siliguri, was arrested along with two other persons after police found heroin from their possession in 2004. Mr Das was granted bail in 2004, but he has not been appearing in the court since 2008. “The Special judge (NDPS), Ms Subrata Hajra, asked police in an order on 29 November to produce Mr Das before the court immediately. But police today produced one Mr Aloke Deb, a resident of Baghajatin Colony, instead of Mr Das. The voter ID card and the driving license of Mr Deb were produced in court. The court rebuked police and show caused the Pradhannagar IC. It asked them to produce Mr Das and also produce Mr Deb in the court by 20 February next. The court has released Mr Deb on personal bond,” said the defence lawyer, Mr Akhil Biswas.
