A home guard, Pulin Barman (55), was injured when a thief, set to steal ornaments adorning the idol from the famous Baira Kalimata Mandir in Kaliaganj, attacked him with a dagger late last night. Hacked in his back, the injured was admitted to Kaliaganj state general hospital.
The incident happened around 2.30 a.m. when two home guards, Pulin Barman and Pallad Barman were on guard. They found two thieves breaking the lock of the temple. When Pulin tried to intercept them they pounced upon him, hacking him on his back with a dagger repeatedly. Leaving him bleeding profusely, the thieves fled.
The secretary of Baira Kalimata Mandir Committee as well as the chairman of Kaliaganj municipality, Mr Arun Dey Sarkar said police had provided two home guards on their own to guard the temple. “The alertness of the guards has foiled the robbery attempt,” he added.
The Inspector-in-charge, Kaliaganj police station, Mr Sremanta Bandapadhaya, said no one has been arrested yet.
“A case has been started over the incident. The criminals will be rounded up soon,” he added.
