KOLKATA, 22 JUNE: “Mamata Banerjee has floated the idea of a Federal Front to cover up her misdeeds” all-India general secretary, Forward Bloc Debabrata Biswas said at the foundation of the party today.
Coming a day after former chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee had accused his successor of speaking the language of criminals, the salvo from the Forward Bloc leader was part of the barrage of concerted criticism the Left Front has launched against Miss Banerjee on the eve of the panchayat elections. The Trinamul Congress does not have any role in national politics, Mr Biswas said. Moreover, the people consider Miss Banerjee as a politician without principles, he added The Trinamul leadership is nursing an illusion of spreading beyond this state after a few MLAs in some of the neighbouring states declared their allegiance to it, Mr Biswas said. But these are mostly dissidents from the Congress who have switched their loyalties to Trinamul, he said. Miss Banerjee does not have a democratic mindset, the Forward Bloc leader said. Not much can be expected from her, he added.
Four partners of the Left Front will meet in the Capital on 1 July to chalk a plan for a non-Congress non-BJP alliance, Mr Biswas said. To achieve this the smaller partners of both UPA II and NDA must be weaned away from it, he said. As for an alliance with the Mulayam Singh Yadav-led Samajawadi Party, Mr Biswas did not set much store by it. Mr Yadav had walked with us in the procession against FDI, but voted in favour of Congress on this issue after he entered the Parliament, Mr Biswas pointed out.
