Excitement rocked Chowringi area under Kaliachak police station last night after Forward Bloc party office was ransacked and set ablaze by some miscreants around 1.30 p.m. After police reached the spot this morning the aggrieved Forward Bloc supporters demonstrated, alleging that police despite being informed in time were late to arrive.
Local Forward Bloc leader, Samed Ali alleged that he rushed to the spot soon after he was informed of the arson targeting the party office. “I immediately contacted police but they did not  care to come. They arrived in the morning today after the office was reduced to cinders ,” Mr Ali claimed.
He informed that the party office built over 2 cottah of government land was inaugurated in 1982. There were several important party documents and properties preserved there, he said, adding “We wonder why the miscreants targeted our party office,” he said.
District Forward Bloc secretary, Srimanta Maitra said: “Tables, benches, chairs, almirahs, television set and even the photograph of Netaji Subhas Bose were destroyed. We are not yet sure as to the motive of the arson. Maybe, the land mafias are involved."
Slamming the role of police, Mr Maitra said, “Kaliachak police station is a stone’s throw from our party office. Police chose to ignore our call for help and reached after four hours.”
SP, Malda Mr Kalyan Mukherjee said, “Police have been inquiring into the matter.  The miscreants would be apprehended soon. An engine of fire brigade reached the spot to douse the flames.” However, he denied that police were late to reach the spot.
