PURULIA, 12 JUNE: Filing of nominations for the panchayat election in Purulia concluded last Friday.
The polls will be held on 2 July in the first phase of election. Yesterday was the last day of withdrawal of nominations.
Factionalism is at its peak in Trinamul, CPM and other political parties.
CPM leader Manindra Gope at a press conference last Sunday warned discontented candidates against going against the party line and decision and asked them indirectly to withdraw their nominations. At the conclusion of withdrawal of nominations yesterday it was found that his instructions were clearly flouted.
There were clear instructions from the Left Front over alliance which included the PDS this time. However, the statistics from the administration shows a different picture: after the withdrawal of nominations it was found that including 17 seats to PDS out of 1,944 gram panchayat seats, the total number of Left Front nominations are 1,963 which is more than the required number. In panchayat samiti too, three extra candidates are found from Left Front though for the zilla parishad there is no such dispute. In Purulia Zilla Parishad, out of 38 seats the CPM has filed nominations for 32 seats while its ally Forward Bloc is contesting six seats. The district CPM leadership, however, is not overly concerned saying the problem would be solved in the Front.
According to sources in the administration the ruling Trinamul Congress could not file nominations in all gram panchayat and panchayat samiti seats even though they have reportedly made an alliance with Independent candidates in Jhalda-I, Jhalda-II and Baghmundi block.
Though TMC is contesting all 38 seats in PZP but in gram panchayat they are contesting 1,906 seats and for 441 seats out of 446 panchayat samiti seats.
The Congress, however, is contesting 1,242 gram panchayat, 345 panchayat samiti and 37 zilla parishad seats in the panchayat election.
