A second year engineering student, Rudranath Karmakar was held for kidnapping his cousin brother and asking for a ransom worth of Rs 12 lakh from his uncle.
Four others were also arrested on the charges of assisting Rudranath – a second year student with Birbhum Institute of Technology – a Santiniketan based private engineering college. 
Mr S M H Meerza, SP, Burdwan said: “These students planned the kidnapping for cash before Puja for their merriment.”
Eleven-year-old Sayak was kidnapped near his house in Kota village in Budbud PS area in Burdwan on 1 October evening. An eyewitness, Mrs Sinuti Nayer said: “Two persons on a motorbike with their faces covered pulled  Sayak forcibly and vanished.”
Sayak&’s father Mr Krishnadayal Karmakar~ a former Dyfi cadre turned Trinamul Congress leader received a ransom call, asking him to pay cash worth Rs 12 lakh within an hour of the kidnapping.  The police and the family members despite of repeated searches couldn’t get any definite clue where the boy. Yesterday, Mr Krishnadayal received another call asking  him to bring the cash to the BC Road stretch in Burdwan town around 2 p.m. The SP said: “The policemen accompanied Mr Krishnadayal but kidnappers got wind of it and fearing arrest they dropped the boy in the midway.” Later Sayak was rescued and was over to his father. The family members and the police were surprised when the boy exposed that he was kidnapped by his cousin brother Rudranath and his friends and was kept in a rented accommodation in Panagarh – barely 5 km from his native Kota village in the house of a couple and the police booked the couple – Sonu Chowdhury and Chandra Chowdhury.
