Siliguri, 6 December
The doctors and other medical staff members at Siliguri District Hospital (SDH) have demanded enhanced security at the facility with incidents of their being assaulted by the relatives of the patients happening almost daily.
The relatives of a child, who was admitted in the hospital, ransacked deepened panic among the hospital staff members.
"This is no isolated incident. Such things have become almost a part of our daily routine,” a doctor said.
He also said: “We feel terribly insecure and because of this, we are finding it difficult to treat the patients being admitted here.”
“Abusing, heckling and ransacking occur mostly during nights,” added the doctor.
The hospital authority lodged an FIR with Siliguri police station, after a
group of people allegedly ransacked the hospital and threatened the medical
staff last night.
Another doctor said despite the police camp existing in the hospital premises, such incidents keep happening almost daily.
“Some police personnel are shifted from the camp, leaving their strength depleted. This adds to our fear,” the doctor said.
The acting SDH medical superintendent, Dr Sanjib Majumdar, said he had requested police to enhance security at the hospital.
Asked for comment, the Siliguri additional deputy commissioner of police, (East), Mr K Sabari
Rajkumar said police personnel are shifted according to the requirement of the force.
“However, if the hospital authority demands enhancement through the proper way we would consider this," he said.
