With a demand for the appointment of teachers in Urdu and Hindi languages, the students of Islampur High School (HS) kept the Headmaster and some other teachers of the school under lock and key in a room and staged an agitation for hours. The agitating students also damaged some furniture of the school during their movement. After being informed, police turned up and rescued the teachers.
It is learnt that the post of five teachers in both Hindi and Urdu languages in different subjects has remained vacant in Islampur High school for more than three years. In absence of teachers, the education of the students are being hampered. The students had also agitated inside the school demanding appointment of the teachers last year but neither the school authorities nor the officials of the District Inspector of school were reportedly cordial to sort out the crisis. Hence, the students kept the teachers under lock and key today.
The Headmaster of Islampur High school, Mr Umesh Chandra Jha, said: "In 2012, we sent a proposal to the office of DI (secondary) of the district urging to appoint some teachers in Urdu and Hindi languages in our school but nothing has formulated as yet. We will contact the DI regarding the matter immediately."
The District Inspector of School (secondary), Mr Narayan Chandra Sarkar, could not be contacted over telephone.
However, an official of the office of DI informed that the proposal which the
Islampur School authorities sent was defective as it was not correct according to roster.
The Secretary of the managing Committee of Islampur High School, Mr Kanaiyalal Agarwal, said: "If the proposal were incorrect according to roster, the DI should have sent it to us for rectification but he did not do so. Rather, he kept it in his office for one-and-a-half years. Hence, he ignored his task as a result of which a crisis has arisen."
The SDO, Islampur, Mr Narayan Sarkar, said: "We came to know of the crisis in the school in absence teachers in Urdu and Hindi languages. We already instructed the DI (secondary) to send the proposal of the school for the teachers in Urdu and Hindi languages to SSC authorities after its rectification soon."
