BARASAT, 27 JUNE: CPI-M women supporters who were canvassing for the panchayat election, were allegedly heckled and attacked by Trinamul supporters in Sason tonight.
Women CPI leaders like Mrs Rekha Goswami and Mrs Ramala Chakrabarty were among those heckled. They were allegedly also beaten up by motorcycle-borne Trinamul supporters. Twenty-two of them were injured and have been admitted in hospital. According to the CPI-M supporters, the incident took place at Sason market at after 6 today. Mrs Goswami and Mrs Chakrabarty held an election rally in Sason with an election candidate, Mrs Ashik Nuri, wife of CPIM leader Majid Master. For the rally, they had arranged six pick-up vans in which the women supporters were riding. The party leaders were in a separate vehicle moving ahead of the vans. They were going to every house in this area with the candidate and appealing for votes. There were only women supporters in the entire rally. Mrs Goswami said that after some time when they crossed the Sason market, they noticed that locals were not responding to their canvassing like earlier in the day. The CPI-M women leaders then came to know that their supporters riding in the pick-up vans had been attacked by bike-borne Trinamul supporters. Even as they turned around, they found themselves surrounded by a large group of motorcycle-riding Trinamul supporters.
There were around 250 Trinamul supporters, all of them male, said the leaders. The Trinamul supporters allegedly dragged the women down from the vans, and beat them up with sticks, bricks and iron rods. When the CPI-M women leaders tried to protest, they were threatened with dire consequences. Mrs Chakrabarty said the Trinamul supporters also were trying to abduct or murder the candidate, Mrs Ashik Nur. With the help of Barasat police they were able to save her by sending her home in an autorickshaw. At least 22 CPI-M women supporters were injured and have been admitted in hospital. The leaders have lodged an FIR against the TMC supporters in Barasat police station.
