Raiganj, 25 October
In protest against the bad condition of National Highway 34, the members of North Dinajpur CPI-M
committee have decided to block the road on a total of 34 spots on 29 October in North Dinajpur district. Apart from the blockade on NH-34 and NH-31, the State
Highway in Kaliaganj, Goalpokhar and Chakulia blocks will be blocked by the CPI-M members that day.
The members of CITU and the members of
different traders associations’, including the members of West Dinajpur Chamber of Commerce on 30 September also staged an agitation in front of the office of the North Dinajpur District Magistrate against the bad condition of the roads.
The Secretary of North Dinajpur CPI-M committee, Mr Bireswar Lahiri, said: "Around 75 km road from Itahar to Purnea more in Dalkhola of North Dinajpur district has remained in bad condition for months. Different portions of the road have become unmotorable. In the meantime, numerous buses and lorries have stopped plying through NH-34 in the district. The transportation of goods to the district is being hampered. The supply of essential commodities is becoming scarce."
"Different traders associations’ and the members of CITU previously staged an agitation demanding the immediate repair of the road but to no avail. Hence, we decided to block the road on 34 spots from Bangar Check post in Itahar to Sonapur in Chopra on 29 October,” he said.
“We will organise roadblocks for half-an-hour, from 10 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. that day. The members of our Left Front partners will be also invited to join this movement. If the NHAI officials do not take care of the construction of the road then we will start a movement in the district," Mr Lahiri also added.
The Additional District Magistrate of North
Dinajpur, Mr S W Bhutiya, said: "On behalf of our administration, we are approaching the officials of NHAI so that the broken places of the road are repaired shortly."
