Baruipur, 27 June: Mr Sujan Chakraborty, the South 24 Parganas district CPI-M secretary and CPI-M state committee member, was charged today with the murder of the Trinamul Congress candidate for panchayat samity and the ‘karmadhaksha’ of the Baruipur panchayat samity, Shibram Naskar.
Naskar was killed yesterday afternoon at Kurali of Harda under Baruipur police station when he was on his way back home.
The Baruipur police have registered a case against Mr Chakraborty alleging that the CPI-M leader was involved in the TMC candidate’s murder. This created tension in the Baruipur area, where Trinamul Congress activists demanded the CPI-M leader’s immediate arrest and stringent punishment to boot.
But the CPI-M, in turn, claimed that a neutral inquiry has been conducted on the murder, and said that the allegation is a conspiracy on the state government’s part.
When asked for his reaction to the murder charge against him, Mr. Chakraborty said that it was a reflection of the TMC’s fear, adding that the government is trying to implicate him in a false case similar to when it had aligned him with the Saradha scam. He challenged the government to have him convicted on the basis of the FIR lodged against him in the murder case. In fact, the CPI-M leader said, Mr Naskar and close associates of his, including Mr Kanu Sanfui, were drinking alcohol when the TMC candidate became embroiled in a dispute with his party colleagues, which led to his murder.
Mr Partha Chatterjee, the state minister for industry, and Mr Biman Bandopaddhay, the speaker of the assembly, met with Mr Naskar’s bereaved family at Baruipur, extending monetary help to them.
to the family. Mr Chatterjee alleged that the CPI-M has been engaging in such politics of murder all over the state in an effort to stop the panchayat polls, and that Mr Naskar’s murder was pre-planned by the CPI-M.
He didn’t want to comment on Mr Chakraborty’s involvement in the murder, however, but said that police are looking into the allegation.
A group of TMC representatives, led by Mr Firhad Hakim, the municipal minister, and Mr Shovan Chatterjee, the mayor of Kolkata Municipal Corporation and Trinamul’s South 24 Parganas president, went to the house  of the deceased to hand over his body once a post mortem had been conducted.
Police said that one Dinabandhu Sanfui had been arrested so far. Sources also added three other accused in the case ~ Biman Naskar, Raju Naskar and Jukta Mondal ~ are still absconding.
