Balurghat, 4 September
Cough syrups worth several lakhs while en route to be smuggled from Raiganj to Bangladesh were impounded by Gangarampur police over the past 24 hours. Police also arrested two persons. They were identified as Kalyan Choudhury (26) of Patiram in the Balurghat police station area and his driver, Jiban Debnath (28) of Balurghat.
According to police sources, Kalyan had stored several boxes containing the syrups in his truck in order to smuggle them to Bangladesh through a tout based in that neighbouring country. Acting on a tip-off, a Gangarampur police team led by the Inspector-in-charge Mr A Gope, arrived at the spot and seized the containers. The accused duo was produced before the chief judicial magistrate court. Both were remanded in jail custody.
Cough syrup smuggling has become a regular phenomenon in the area flanked by the international border with Bangladesh.
A swathe of the international border has remained unfenced and this is what is helping the cough syrup smugglers operating on both sides of the border, according to BSF sources.
BSF officials in the Hili border area said the department has intensified vigil in the border areas of South Dinajpur district recently to stop cough syrup smuggling across the border.
Mr Gope said that Bangladeshi smugglers and rustlers always try to sneak from the border area while the Bangladesh police and security in most cases help them in the matter.
