SILIGURI, 18 JUNE: Traffic came to a grinding halt in Siliguri as the Siliguri Town Congress staged a roadblock near Siliguri Junction today.
The roadblock came up after a scuffle had taken place between the private taxi drivers and the drivers which hold the government permits at Siliguri Junction on Sunday night. Police arrested two persons associated with the Taxi Stand Drivers and Owners (TSDO), a Congress affiliate.
The Siliguri Town Congress alleged that a group of Trinamul Congress had hired goons to attack the members of the TSDO. The TMC activists are also alleged to have ripped apart the party flag and damaged a martyrs’ plinth at the party office.
The Town Congress demanded the arrest of the culprits. Traffic remained stuck for around two hours from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Students were stuck as buses carrying them were stranded on the roads.
The same was the case with others. Police had a tough time in controlling the agitators and freeing the road of the blockades.
The deputy commissioner of traffic, Mr Jayanta Pal, said police had exercised patience in dispersing the agitators.
“We have tried to mitigate the people&’s inconveniences by diverting the stranded vehicles along some alternative routes. But police did not apply force to disperse the agitators,” Mr Pal said.
