Police recover stolen taxi
KOLKATA, 8 JUNE: A taxi that was stolen yesterday by two youths after they beat up its driver in Tala has been found at a garage in CIT quarters. The vehicle was recovered by police after Mr Rajendra Prasad, the taxi driver, complained that that two men, who had boarded the taxi from Dum Dum Park for Cossipore, asked him to stop the car when they reached near Tala. The duo beat him up when he stopped the vehicle and fled with the taxi, he alleged. No one has been arrested in the case. sns
Howrah Jute Mill workers out of job
KOLKATA, 8 JUNE: More than 4,000 workers of Howrah Jute Mill have been rendered jobless after the mill declared a lockout today citing lower production. The workers saw the lockout notice at the mill gate when they turned up for work this morning. sns
Bomb blast: Death toll rises to five   
DIAMOND HARBOUR, 8 JUNE: Two of the five persons injured three days ago in a crude bomb explosion at Bijoyganj Bazaar in Bhangor died today taking the toll to four. While Najrul Mollah (30) and Toyeb Mollah (28) died yesterday, Shajahan Mollah (30) and Babu alias Kachi Mollah (32) died today. sns
3 held for fraud
KOLKATA, 8 JUNE: City police have arrested three persons, including an employee of a nationalised bank, in connection with the Rs 20-crore fraud in a state co-operative bank. While Atindra Chandra Saha, the employee of the nationalised bank in Selimpur, was arrested from Lake Town, Nehar Choudhury and Goutam Gupta were arrested from Howrah. The amount was siphoned off when it was transferred to an account of the Selimpur branch a few months ago. sns

KOLKATA, 8 JUNE: Metro Rail services were affected for 40 minutes this evening after a 22-year old youth attempted suicide by jumping in front of a Dum Dum-bound train at Sovabazar-Sutanuti station around 8.31 p.m. He was rescued by Metro staff after being injured and was rushed to R G Kar Medical College and Hospital. Services were restored at 9.10 p.m. sns
