The Vice Chancellor of Burdwan University faced agitation by several groups of teachers and non-teaching staff who brought charges of anomaly in promotion process against him. Later, angry students’ union members also assembled in front of the V-C’s office at Rajbati complex here and camped till late evening.
The V-C, Dr Smritikumar Sarkar, sought intervention of police and senior administrative officials as the agitators detained the V-C and the senior Executive Council members till 8 p.m. at his office throughout the day today and did not allow him to leave his chamber. The Trinamul Congress’ student&’s union came to the V-C’s ‘rescue’ but got involved in harsh altercation with the party&’s non-teaching union members.
The Trinamul Congress&’s Burdwan University Karmachari Samiti, another TMC faction called All Bengal Siksha Bandhu Samiti and the teachers and non-teaching staff of the University Institute of Technology were seen camping since morning at different gates in BU&’s Rajbati complex that accommodates the VC&’s office here.
The unions claimed that several employees were offered promotion from the post of junior assistant to junior superintendent bypassing the grade of senior assistant.
Also, the V-C&’s office remained indifferent on the issue of recruitment in 403 vacant non-teaching posts.
The CPI-M backed union of the non-teaching staff had separately submitted a representation to the V-C with similar demands.
