Do you hide your rough and dark elbows in full sleeves and knees in full dress or pants? How often do you scrub clean your knees and elbows in the right manner? Probably twice or thrice a week or during pedicure or manicure sessions. A bath every day is not enough to keep these area clean. Infrequent and improper cleaning leads to the build-up of dead skin cells. That’s the reason these parts look darker compared to the rest of the body. You need to clean them thoroughly every day.

To clean them well, apply soap and move your hands in upward-downward direction and from left to right and vice-versa to remove all dirt. Exfoliate the area with a loofah or scrubber to remove dead skin cells. Also pay attention to the backside of the knees. Dirt and sweat accumulates there that may increase the risk of infection and itching. Don’t forget to moisturise these parts. You may use exfoliating cream in this area as well.

Here are few tips to make your own scrubs.

1 Make a thick paste of one tablespoon of coconut oil and one of walnut powder. Rub this thick paste on the affected areas for two to three minutes thrice a week. Rinse with water. After taking shower, apply coconut oil on knees and elbows daily. Coconut oil hydrates the skin and the vitamin E content lightens it.

2 Dip a cotton ball in hydrogen peroxide solution and apply it on your knees and elbows. Leave it for 15-20 minutes. Rinse with lukewarm water. Pat dry and moisturise. Repeat this process every alternate day. Hydrogen peroxide helps in removing dark and dead skin cells. If your skin is sensitive, dilute the solution with equal quantity of water and then apply.

3 Aloe Vera improves skin tone and gives protection from UV rays. Cut the aloe leaf and extract the pulp. Apply it on elbows and knees twice a day. Leave it for 15-20 minutes. Rinse with lukewarm water. It will make them softer and brighter.

4 Mix two tablespoons of olive oil or almond oil with two tablespoons of sugar. Stir it well. Scrub your knees and elbows with the mixture in circular motion for about five minutes daily. Olive or almond oil will hydrate and nourish the skin and sugar will remove dead and dark skin cells.

5 Mix one tablespoon of yogurt with one teaspoon of vinegar. Apply it on dark knees and elbows and leave it for 15-20 minutes. Rinse with water. Repeat it every day before having bath. It will cleanse the skin by removing dead cells and dirt from the pores. The nutrients in yogurt will nourish the skin. Vinegar helps in depigmentation of dark areas.
